Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch is deliver a provincial inventory and forest analysis program that provides information essential for allowable annual cut (AACs) decisions and for informed management of a wide range of resource issues resulting from catastrophic events (e.g., wildfires and insects); changes to the timber harvesting land base; new forest inventory information; changes to forest and range tenures and legislation; wildlife habitat practices; and other new or evolving forest practices (e.g., old growth).

The Director, Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch is responsible for the formation of a progressive, responsive, and effective natural resource analysis framework as well as the availability, accessibility and integrity of forest inventory data, which all support the Ministry's business needs as well as other resource agencies. These needs include the provision of rigorous forestry information and analyses for issues, such as: sustainable forest management, land-use planning; timber supply analysis; treaty negotiations; tenure management issues; wildlife habitat; forest practices; resource management decision-making; catastrophic events; and, the state of forest reporting, both provincial and national.

As a senior manager, this position leads special initiatives, coordinates responses to urgent and/or emerging issues impacting the program and Ministry, and provides expert advice to a variety of internal and external stakeholders and partners. Additionally, the Director manages the Branch's business planning, performance management, and daily operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Registered Professional Forester or equivalent, or immediately eligible for registration. Note: Immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the ABCFP within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Bachelor of Science in resource management, forestry, or related studies, and at least 6 years of current experience in forest management; or, the equivalent combination of 10 years of forest management experience and education, such as the pupil program.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in management and supervision of geographically dispersed multi-disciplinary staff.
  • Experience negotiating/mediating solutions in natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to build and maintain cooperative and productive relationships with First Nations and a broad array of internal and external stakeholders and partners.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to manage effectively, provide strategic advice, and manage high profile issues while working with multiple internal and external stakeholders and partners.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to organize, manage, and lead diverse complex projects simultaneously while following accepted project management techniques, and manage project-related service contracts to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to develop, explain, and present high level policy, practices, and strategic plans both verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise style that is appropriate to the audience, including: delivering presentations to senior management, external business and community; and facilitating workshops.
